More often than not, the Oscars’ Best Picture winner is a clear front runner that blows the competition away and sweeps awards as Oppenheimer did last year. That’s not the case this year as honours have been shared throughout awards season so far. The winners of the two major awards at the Golden Globes, Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist, have a record-breaking thirteen and ten nominations respectively, making them favourites. However, Conclave follows receiving the most BAFTA nominations with eight nominations from the Academy. Wicked also receives thirteen nominations, with Dune: Part Two, A Complete Unknown, The Substance, Anora, I’m Still Here, and Nickel Boys completing the list of popular films in contention for the main award. For the first time in what feels a very long time it seems, whichever wins, it’ll be a big surprise.

Achievement In Directing is just as unpredictable and a category that guarantees a first-time winner as The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet, Emilia Pérez’s Jacques Audiard, Anora’s Sean Baker, The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat, and A Complete Unknown’s James Mangold are all first-time nominees.

Competition is equally fierce on the acting front. Cynthia Erivo has the chance to claim her EGOT as she’s nominated for Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role, where she’s joined by Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Fernanda Torres, plus Karla Sofía Gascón who becomes the first trans person to be nominated for an Academy Award. Meanwhile, Monica Barbaro, Ariana Grande, Felicity Jones, Isabella Rossellini, and Zoe Saldana compete for Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role.

Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role sees Succession stars Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong compete, as they’re named alongside Yura Borisov, Edward Norton, and Guy Pearce. The Brutalist leading man Adrian Brody is probably the favourite for Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role, though he too faces strong competition from Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan are all vying for

The stage is set for a night of surprises. The 97th Academy Awards, broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles in the early hours of Monday 3 March.
