Oscars 2020 Winners

Parasite makes history as the night’s big winner

Article Published on 10.02.2020

Directed by South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, writer-director of The Host, Snowpiercer, and Okja, Parasite is a vicious social satire about two different families living in Seoul, one rich and one poor. It’s garnered an incredible amount of critical acclaim and now the winner of four Oscars: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature, and the first-ever non-English language film to be named Best Picture.

Sam Mendes’ BAFTA-sweeping war epic 1917 may have missed out on the top prize many had predicted it to win but was still rewarded with three Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins.

There was at least one win each for Joker, Little Women, Jojo Rabbit, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Le Mans ’66, Marriage Story, but Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman was the only main nominated film to go home empty-handed.

In terms of acting, everything went as expected as Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern completed the awards season sweep in their categories.

Other notable winners on the night included Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin who won best original song for (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from Rocketman and Toy Story 4 which claimed Best Animated Feature nine years after Toy Story 3 won the same award.
