Words Aaron Potter

“Cobra Kai, Never Dies.”

These four words have defined the Karate Kid franchise for the past seven years, with the celebrated Netflix series offering insight into the universe long after Daniel LaRusso landed his famous crane kick at the All-Valley Karate Championship all the way back in ’84.

Over four decades later, the coming-of-age franchise returns to the silver screen where it belongs in an all-new legacyquel that brings everything together.

Ralph Maccio once again steps into the role of the original Karate Kid, LaRusso, this time teaming up with Jackie Chan’s Mr Han, from the 2010 reboot, to help another young kung fu prodigy. Taking on the Karate Kid name is newcomer Ben Wang is Li Fong, who hopes to win a prestigious karate competition after being uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to start a new life in New York City after a family tragedy.

Three generations of Karate Kid come together in a worthy instalment that honours the legacy of the late Pat Morita and his teachings as Mr Miyagi and promises to kick start a new one. Two teachers, one legend.

Movie Mentors

Yoda

The Empire Strikes Back swiftly taught audiences that “size matters not” and instantly cemented Yoda as one of the best onscreen mentors ever. A former jedi master with deep knowledge of the Force… iconic quotes, unlimited are.

K

Stern, direct, yet deadpan funny in a way only the great Tomy Lee Jones could deliver, Agent K’s mission to teach Will Smith’s Men In Black trainee is a classic master-student dynamic and the core element that grounds this quirky sci-fi universe.

Peter Parker

Not the mentor he wanted, but definitely the one he needed. Miles Morales learns that anyone can wear the mask while under the tutelage of a laid-back, forlorn, slightly pudgy version of the webslinger. Miles wouldn’t have taken his leap of faith Into The Spider-Verse without him.
