The cultural phenomenon of Barbenheimer brought audiences to cinemas in their droves and critical acclaim continues for both, but its Christopher Nolan’s masterful telling of the creation and detonation of the world’s first atom bomb that's still burning brightest. Among its thirteen nominations, Oppenheimer is named in competition for Best Film, Christopher Nolan for Director and Adapted Screenplay, and Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr in the acting categories.

Barbie, Greta Gerwig's bright-pink summer sensation and biggest film of last year, is surprisingly absent from the Best Film and Director categories, but does see nods for Leading Actress Margot Robbie and Supporting Actor Ryan Gosling among its five nominations.

The closest competition rivalling Oppenheimer in terms of numbers is the Poor Things, the new madcap comedy from the director of The Favourite follows its success at the Goldn Globes and earns eleven nominations, including Best Film and Emma Stone for Leading Actress.

First-time nominees Jonathan Glazer, Andrew Haigh, Alexander Payne, and Justine Triet join Bradley Cooper and Christopher Nolan to complete the list of directors in their category, while the acting nominations include Killers Of The Flower Moons’ Robert De Niro, Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan, All Of Us Strangers’ Paul Mescal, Past Lives’ Teo Yoo, and Sandra Hüller for both The Zone Of Interest and Anatomy Of A Fall.

Both of which are vying to be named as the best Film Not In The English Language, nominated alongside 20 Days In Mariupol, Past Lives, and the Netflix disaster film Society Of The Snow. Wonka’s only nomination is for Outstanding British Film while those named in competition for Animated Film are Studio Ghibli’s The Boy And The Heron, Aardman’s Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget, Disney and Pixar’s Elemental, and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.

David Tennant hosts this year’s awards ceremony at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 18 February.
