In the late 1800s, two Irish orphans arrive in New York City with hopes of meeting their uncle and claiming an inheritance. Upon arrival, they find no one waiting for them and decide to journey to California on their own. Lacking the funds for train tickets, they cleverly follow a group of orphans under the supervision of a governess, managing to board the train with them. During their travels, they befriend a wheelchair-bound boy from the group. Their adventure takes an unexpected turn during a train stop when the three children are left behind. They must use their wits to rejoin the train.
